How to Find the Right 3M™ Bonding Product for your Project
Posted by Daniel Miller on Nov 20th 2013
1. Specify the goal of your project
It is has been said that, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. As a customer service representative and someone who has been trained to find 3M product solutions, what I am about to tell you will shorten your research and testing period dramatically. This process begins by knowing what you are doing and being able to clearly communicate so that we can narrow down your search.
I. What is your projected total production number?
II. What is the estimated timeline of the project?
III. What materials do you need bonded?
IV. Are there any environmental conditions to be considered such as high/low temperatures and moisture?
V. How long of a bonding time do you need?
VI. What stresses are involved?
2. Narrow down your solutions
Since we offer thousands of industrial and manufacturing bonding agents, you can help us trim the options we need to research and thus save you valuable time. The number one question in this step is what you currently use in your application and why are you not pleased with the results? Consider this scenario:
I. Company XYZ uses Product F to adhere metal floor panels in rail cars.
II. The customer notices the floor panels coming loose and frequent repairs are needed because Product F does not handle the weather and day to day stress well.
III. This is inconvenient and not cost effective for Company XYZ because more products must be purchased due to frequent repairs, rail cars being taken off of transportation routes for maintenance, and employees being paid to spend more time on a project than expected.
When you as the customer are able to clearly communicate the current issue in your process, we can more easily find a solution. In this case we would probably recommend the New 3M Structural Acrylic Adhesive which is a more secure bond, handles weathering better than competitors, and comes in a low odor form to prevent worker health issues.
3. Look for “how to guides” and other pertinent information
Did you know we have blog articles addressing the following?
I. How to choose between acrylic and rubber based adhesives
II. Knowing the best way to stick to Low Surface Energy Surfaces
III. Choosing between 3M™ Dual Lock™ and 3M™ Hook and Loop
