Using 3M’s Scotch® ATG System
Posted by Lisa Albreada-Ponte on Aug 30th 2013
3M’s Scotch® ATG Systems are an easy and quick way to apply a clean strip of adhesive tape while removing the liner at the same time. Scotch® ATG tapes areavailable in three widths (¼”, ½” and ¾”) with two main applicators to apply these tapes. The red ATG 714 applicator applies ¼” tapes, while the yellow ATG 700 applicator applies both ½” and ¾” tapes. There is also an adapter available which allows the ATG 700 applicator to apply ¼” tapes as well.
The Scotch® ATG System allows you to avoid hours of cutting individual tape strips, carefully applying them, and then picking to remove that pesky liner. The Scotch® ATG System does all this for you with a touch of the finger to the ATG (Adhesive Transfer Gun) trigger, controlled application of a strip of Scotch® ATG pressure sensitive tape, and automatically rewinding the liner into the back of the applicator.
This system leaves no mess, no clean up, and no frustration. Well, no frustration if you can figure out how to load the applicator in the first place. Lucky for us, 3M has a very useful video that explains and demonstrates how to load and use the ATG Applicator making it very easy to understand. Click here to see how it works!
After watching the above video, you should now understand how to load and use the ATG Applicator, but you may need a little more assistance choosing the correct tape. Fortunately 3M’s advanced acrylic adhesives technology offers a variety of tapes to meet different application requirements. The following flyer offers several suggestions of tapes to use depending on the surfaces you are bonding: Scotch ATG Flyer. If this flyer is confusing or you need more assistance choosing the correct tape, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will happy to help determine the correct product for your application.
At this point you’ve found the perfect tape for your application, and you’re an expert at loading and using the ATG applicator. However, for some reason you just cannot seem to figure out how to get this one pesky roll loaded into the applicator even though you know you’re doing everything right. Well, there’s a small chance you may have ended up with a roll where the adhesive tape is sticking to the wrong side of the liner, making it impossible to load correctly. This does not mean you are stuck with an unusable roll, it just means you might need to do some tweaking to get the roll to load correctly. If you don’t want to do any tweaking or have a large quantity of rolls like this, please call us at 1-800-249-3333 and we can get these rolls replaced for you (if they were purchased from us). However, if it is only a roll or two and you need to use the tape today, please watch the following video demonstrating how to correct these rolls.
